One thing to love about natural hairstyles is their versatility. There are no limits on how to rock your natural hair. Whether your hair is short, medium, or long, there is always a style for everyone.
This article will give you everyday styling ideas to rock your natural hair effortlessly based on your hair length. Let's get to it.
Before we begin, keep in mind that to achieve these hairstyles, you will need your fixed products, such as leave-in conditioner, hair butter, oil, and, of course, water in a spritz bottle. You don't want to style your hair when it's totally dry.
For naturals at the beginning of their journey or transitioning it can be a challenge styling your hair.
Well, the TWA is here for you; this hairstyle is the simplest way to rock your hair. All you need is a moisturizer and oil to keep your hair shiny, moisturized and of course attractive.
Make your natural coils pop with the defined coily crop for short hair. The coily crop takes away the focus from the size of your hair to the pattern of your curl.
A cute way of showing off your unique hair pattern. To help you achieve the coily crop, you need a curl cream or mousse for the best result. Don't forget to add oil for that extra glow.
The Mohawk is a versatile natural hairstyle that you can achieve easily with short hair.
You need a couple (okay, maybe a lot) of bobby pins for this one, depending on how short your hair is. With this hairstyle, feel free to accessorize with hair clips too.
For that sleek look on the sides, use a gel; otherwise, brush gently and use a good amount of pins to hold the sides down.
Now, one thing about the pineapple hairstyle is that any hair volume can rock it. So, if you have short hair, don't feel intimidated to rock a pineapple. You'll need a long elastic string, a shoe lace or a scarf to hold up the pineapple. Feel free to use gel for that sleek look around the edges.
The pineapple is a classic natural hairstyle. You can't go wrong with it.
For this classy hairstyle, you section your hair into two uneven parts. The section at the back should have more hair so you can tie it into an afro. In the front section, you braid your hair into a flat twist towards the left or right side of your face. Use bobby pins to secure it firmly as you style.

If you love the type 4 hairstyle suggestions for short hair, you can also rock them with your medium length hair, just that you won’t have a TWA 😉
This hairstyle is like making pigtails but with an afro. You split your hair into two equal sections from the middle. With a shoelace, string, or scrunchies, hold both sections in place.
Now, if you're feeling adventurous, you can bring out hair strands at the sides of your hair and accessorize with beads if you like.
The half-up, half-down is a flattering hairstyle for medium-length, high-density naturals. With this hairstyle you show your volume with the section packed up and flaunt the length of your hair with the other section packed down.
For this style you'll need elastic hair bands to hold the section packed up. You also have the option of folding this section into a bun as well.
It's safe to say at this point that the mohawk is a versatile hairstyle. For this look, you'll need bobby pins and elastic bands to hold the bubbles in place.
With this hairstyle, you can add twist-out bangs in the front like this super cute inspiration from @jay-anoka or leave everything in a bubble. Add hair jewelry to the bubbles for that extra effect, like in this YouTube tutorial.
That's a mouthful right? Not to worry it isn't as complicated as the name makes it sound.
For this hairstyle, you need 4 sections. Follow these steps:
For the tiny hairs at the side, use your favorite cream or gel to make two strands twists. You can add beads like our style inspiration in this video from the Black Woman Natural Hairstyle.
For that chic, timeless, neat natural girl look- the classic low bun is your go to hairstyle. The beauty of this hairstyle is that you can rock it anywhere!
So, for this look all you need are your elastic hair bands or scrunchies if you like.
This is how you make the bun:
If you have high-density hair and you don't want to add gel to this hairstyle, you should work with your hair in sections, so you can brush easily and achieve that clean laid-back effect.
Once that is done, use a satin scarf to tie the hair down for about 2-5 minutes, like my friend will say “Iron the hair flat”.
Voila, all done! Feel free to add hair accessories if you like. Check out this sleek back tutorial with no gel by Glory Okings on YouTube.
Moving on, let's see natural hairstyles for long-length type 4 hair.
So, for long-length naturals, hairstyling might be a little struggle, because of having to work through long hair and getting it to stay in place.
Well, check out these long-length hairstyle ideas
For this hairstyle, you'll need: Flexi Rod sets, curl cream, foam wrap lotion, or mousse if you prefer that.
Based on how comfortable you are working with your hair and your patience level, part your hair into sections. Gradually apply products to each section and wrap it around the flexi rods till you get to the tip of your hair, then fold. Do that for every section and then allow your hair to air dry.
If your hair takes forever to dry, you can use minimal heat to hasten the process if you don't have time. Now, once your hair is dry, take out the flexi rods one after the other. After that, add oil to your fingers to separate the large curls into smaller curls. Separate your hair in the natural direction of the curls so you maintain the pattern. Once all the curls are separated, you can use a pick comb to fluff out the roots for a fuller look.
You can also use perm rods to achieve this look, use big rods so your hair doesn't feel cramped. Don’t fret, if the Flexi Rod twist-out does not come out to your liking, you can always pin it up into a faux mohawk, or wear it in a high puff!
*Note: Adding oil to your fingers is optional, but some people find it easy to separate their coils when they do so.
Now this is a classic low bun but with a twist at the ends of your hair.
To achieve this look, pack your hair into a low bun, instead of leaving the ends out, you pick random sections and twist the ends then tuck the ends inside to form a closed bun.
Feel free to accessorize with hair jewelry or with a scarf, just like the trend. Check out this inspiration from @oluwafeyifunmii on Instagram
The halo hairstyle is one comfortable way to wear your hair out without worrying about restyling, you can carry this hairstyle for weeks.
For this style, all you need to do is section your hair into 2 sections, like you would pigtails. Then start from the back of one section, weave your hair all the way to the back of the other section like a circle.
Once you are done, tuck the tip into the closest section or hold it down with a bobby pin. For that clean finish, make sure your edges are laid back, either with gel or with tying a scarf on your edges for a few minutes to lay them down.

Flat twists are flattering on long type 4 hair. You can always switch them up into any style of your choice.
For the flat twist bun you want to section your hair into three. A larger section towards the back and two smaller sections on the left and right at the front.
Start by arranging the back section into a neat bun, either the classic or the Pinterest bun. Once that is done make flat twists on the two front sections and smooth it all the way back to the bun.
You can use pins to hold the twists down if you like.
The two-strand twist is every natural's go-to natural hairstyle.
It's a major protective style, and with long hair, you can always find multiple ways to style and rock this twist. All you need is to section your hair into large chunks and twist. Then go ahead to style as you like with bobby pins or elastic bands.
So much love to Limitless Bloom on YouTube for the chunky twists inspiration.
Type 4 natural hair is so versatile and beautiful, whether you have long, short or medium hair, there is always a style you can rock anytime and for any occasion.
