How to Care for Your Two-Strand Twist Hairstyle Until Takedown

Care for two-strand twists and extending the life of your hairstyle after wash day can be a huge struggle for coily girls.

In this article, we'll talk about how to wash your hair while it’s in a two-strand twists and hacks to keep your twists looking good after wash day. We'll discuss how to maintain your hair's appearance from wash day, when it's in a twist, until you take it down.

To start, let's talk about wash day

How To Go About Wash Day While In a Twist

Wash day as the name says is the day you set aside to give your hair a good wash, some good TLC.  Typically, wash day involves the processes of detangling, pre-pooing, shampooing, deep conditioning, moisturising, and, in some cases, styling

It's essential to know that everybody's wash day is different and some people may not include all the processes above in their routine, which is totally fine.

The most important thing is to have a wash day routine that you stick to, especially if you are a lazy or busy natural.

This wash day comes with a twist (pun intended😄). Here is a simple wash day routine you can try if your hair is already in a two-strand twist style and has stayed in for about a week, two or more.

Washing Your Hair in Protective Twists

  1. Spritz some water on your hair before applying shampoo. You do this because your hair is in a protective style. Focus on your scalp more to free product build-up. As for the hair strands, when you wash your scalp, it'll also flow to the strands, and you can touch them lightly. Not too much, you don't want to roughen up your hair or unravel the twists.
  2. Next step is to condition your hair, not a deep conditioner but a hydrating conditioner, this is to give your twist moisture and shine. Apply the conditioner on your strands and cover with the plastic bag for about 5-10 minutes or according to the instructions on the bottle.
  3. After 10 minutes, rinse out the conditioner, pat with a microfibre towel or t-shirt. You notice that your hair looks shiny and fresh.
  4. Now, go ahead to moisturize with either the LOC or LCO method depending on what works for your hair. Don't forget to oil your scalp.

LOC & LCO explained

The LOC and LCO are acronyms that show moisturization methods. They refer to the order in which products are applied.

L- stands for leave-in-conditioner

O- stands for oil

C- stands for cream

Hacks to Extend the Life and Care For Your Two-Strand Twist

  1. Restyle your twist. So, after moisturizing. Style your hair in a low bun or high bun, and add a scrunchie or any accessory. It'll take away the attention from how old the hair is to how it still looks good.
  2. Always use a satin bonnet or a satin pillowcase. Satin is milder on natural hair and keeps your hair soft when you take it off.
  3. When your hair gives you old twists, make twist-outs. What we mean to say is, a good hack to extend the life of your hairstyle is to loosen the twists. You get a new style and a new look. Don't forget to moisturize.
  4. Throw on a wig. So, if you aren't ready to re-twist your two-strand twist, you can throw on a wig. Your hair underneath is moisturized, and you can still leave it in for longer.
